11.30 - Arrival |
The first undergraduates were admitted for the degree of Physics and Philsophy
in October 1968, sitting Finals in June 1971.
Since then about 500 people have read P&P. The Physics and Philosophy
Committee are celebrating the 40th Anniversary
with a Reunion at St Hilda's College on 21st June 2009. All P&P
graduates and Final Year undergraduates are invited to attend.
The Reception will be an opportunity to find out who's come and who
hasn't.
Sparkling wine or sparkling elderflower presse served on the lawn by
the Cherwell
in the glorious early summer sun (we hope!)
with the accompaniment of
The Platnauer Quartet, Oxford University
Music Faculty Performance Scholars 2009.
Dr Julian Barbour will speak about the role of philosophy in
understanding physics.
Julian is a very distinguished independent researcher,
and Visiting Professor in the Oxford Philosophy Faculty.
He is author of
The End of Time and The Discovery of Dynamics. (See
Julian's Web Site for more details.)
Prof. Simon Saunders will speak about the distinctive character of
the P&P degree at Oxford.
Simon read P&P at New College, and is now a Professor in the Philosophy
Faculty
having been appointed to the post vacated by the retirement of Rom Harre
who will be remembered by those from the early years of the course.
Anna Lewis will speak about her move into the study of complex
biological systems.
Anna read P&P at Balliol, and is now a graduate student in
the new field of systems biology.
Dr. Christopher Palmer will chair and try to keep proceedings short
so that we can spend time meeting old friends!
Christopher read Physics at Queens and is the current Chairman of the P&P
Commitee.
The program for
the day is given above; the cost for the day is £40.
Family members wishing to
come to Oxford but not the symposium are welcome to join us for tea at a cost
of £5.
