Oxford
Quantum Club
for
high school students
Entrance test
This year we are piloting
a new admission system, following the same scheme as COMPOS, with the first assignment playing
the role of the entrance test. We ask you to complete this COMPOS assignment from the last academic year. This
will give you a background on complex numbers, which is necessary to understand
quantum mechanics.
We do not expect you
to solve all problems, but please do your best. We hope to be able to admit all
students who performed reasonably well (the exact cutoff mark to be determined).
You are welcome to
use AI as your tutor to help you understand the material, but, needless to say,
you must not ask it to solve the problems for you. We appreciate that cheating is
easy with AI, but ask yourself, how will it benefit you? The Club programme requires as much work throughout the year as does
the first assignment, and involves even more complicated mathematics. Even if
you are admitted to the Club, you will not be able to follow the course and
likely drop out, just having wasted your and our time.
Your solutions must
be written neatly so we can follow your logic. Otherwise
we will not be able to credit your work even if it shows a correct final
answer.
Please email your work
by 12 October to Alex.Lvovsky@physics.ox.ac.uk,
including your solutions as attachments. The subject must be Quantum Club Entrance
Test. This is important, otherwise your email may be missed. The email must
come from the same address you registered
with.
Good luck!
