The structure of disordered crystals

Project Abstract:
We propose to measure the total neutron scattering from a small number of disordered crystals to characterise the atomic structure over short (0-10A) length scales. We will gain structural information about the local correlations and how they deviate from the time-average structural picture which is obtained from analysis of Bragg reflections alone. This characterisation of local distortion will have important consequences for our understanding of disordered structural behaviour, and the physical properties which are known to be intimately associated with disorder. This project will involve the marrying of standard power diffraction methods such as Rietveld and methods more commonly applied to liquid and amorphous materials. Further development of the total scattering method will be undertaken to optimise data collection and analysis for disordered crystalline materials as well as significant enhancements to existing computer modeling methods for extracting structural information from the resultant data. This work will facilitate a general user programme on the new GEM diffractometer at ISIS.
